Renowned trumpeter and Albuquerque resident, Bobby Shew, returns to Outpost with multi-woodwind player, Bob Sheppard, who was a member of Bobby Shew’s sextet in L.A. for many years before joining Chick Corea. Sheppard, who still resides in the LA area, has been called one of the top-tier saxophonists of our time. A jazz luminary with an international reputation, he has been a touring and studio musician for albums, film, and television and has worked with everyone from Billy Childs, Herbie Hancock and Freddy Hubbard to Leonard Cohen, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and many more. He has recorded numerous solo albums as well as graced the recordings of a number of pop artists, including Rickie Lee Jones, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, and Manhattan Transfer, along with jazz vocalists Marilyn Scott, Dianne Reeves, and Natalie Cole.  Born in Albuquerque, NM, Bobby Shew, one of the most in-demand trumpet teachers in the world, is a three-time Grammy nominated trumpeter who has performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Si Zentner and Benny Goodman. He spent 7 years in Las Vegas where he served as lead trumpeter with top show bands, touring and playing with the likes of Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Robert Goulet, Tom Jones and others and was a first-call studio musician in Los Angeles for many years before returning to New Mexico where he served as the director of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra and has been actively involved in the local scene as a performer and educator while continuing to teach and perform worldwide. Joining Shew and Sheppard for this concert is special guest, Argentine singer, Maria Puga Lareo, who is also Bob Sheppard’s wife. Puga Lareo has performed and recorded worldwide with renowned jazz musicians including Arturo Sandoval, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Gomez, and more. Also joining them will be New Mexico’s own, Jim Ahrend, piano; Terry Burns, bass; and Cal Haines, drums.
